Shortlisted for The Planning Awards 2019

As part of the Hackney Wick Fish Island Retrospective Masterplan, we have been shortlisted at ‘The Planning Awards 2019’ in 3 categories – ‘Award for Design Excellence’, ‘Award for Best Use of Heritage in Placemaking (Multiple Buildings)’ & ‘Award for Excellence in Placemaking at High Densities’. Following on from our ‘Fish Island Futures’ Open House event last year (https://buj.co.uk/news/open-house-2018-2391/), the HWFI Retrospective Masterplan is an ongoing research collective which includes 26 architecture practices, CMA Planning & the LLDC. The collective has actively opened up a dialogue between practice and planning, sharing resources to investigate the existing, planned and emerging developments of HWFI and vitally, allowing critical evaluation of these changes and the rate at which they are occurring.

Submission Summary:

‘The approach in Hackney Wick and Fish Island is different from a masterplan, and instead marks a return to principled city building. Owners and occupiers work closely with authorities to successfully steer change in a place which is not in single ownership. This experience highlights the importance of knowing and understanding the particular qualities that contribute to character of a place and the features valued by those that live and work there. This provides the basis for successful placemaking.’
