Orchard Wharf
Orchard Wharf is an upcoming residential-led development aimed at tackling the dramatic housing shortage that faces London. Designing for urban London sites is always challenging; from the constraints of city infrastructure to the potential flooding of the Thames, it is a process that requires innovative and creative solutions.Directly adjacent to the River Lea, the building form balances many of these urban constraints with a positive, contextual design. A protective, brick envelope addresses the busy public city, while sheltering a peaceful garden space that opens up towards the morning light and the river’s edge. Within one of the GLA’s housing zones our major challenge was in providing enough housing to support the vision of residential regeneration on such a constrained site. Working closely with the local authority BUJ has been able to deliver a high level of affordable housing and enriched the public realm.
