40 Marsh Wall

It is thought that Marsh Wall originated from the ancient riverside track that once went around the whole Isle of Dogs, but the name for the dockside roads makes reference to the inland marshes which were lined with massive dock walls. The site is located on a prominent bend in the road and the designs form acts to provide a notable inflection into Marsh Wall. The building creates a prominent marker which directs the view along the Marsh Wall corridor.

A key objective of the building was to establish a high-quality building that provides strong frontage on Marsh Wall while respecting the surrounding and emerging townscape. Along with this was the importance to improve the public realm by increasing movement and establishing a pedestrian link with surrounding neighbouring properties including the transition between the ground level of Marsh wall and the ground level of Manilla Street and Cuba Street.

The building is home to Novotel, and is the tallest all-hotel building in the United Kingdom.

The tallest all-hotel building in the United Kingdom.
